University of Law Thrives at Newcastle University: Expanding Legal Education and Building Strong Partnerships

It has been three years since the University of Law (ULaw) began its collaboration with Newcastle University Law School, and we have been delighted with the warm welcome we’ve received. Since establishing our presence at Windsor Court on the Newcastle University campus, ULaw has experienced remarkable growth, solidifying its place as a leading institution for postgraduate legal education in the North East of England. Through a combination of high-quality vocational and conversion courses, exclusive partnerships with established law firms, and active engagement with the local legal community, ULaw has not only thrived but also strengthened its ties with the region's legal profession.

Engagement with Newcastle Law Society

In addition to its academic offerings and industry partnerships, ULaw has been actively fostering a vibrant legal community.

Over the past year, we have collaborated with Newcastle Law Society on several events. Together with Newcastle University, we hosted the Annual Lecture, delivered by Newcastle University alumnus, The Honourable Mr Justice Nicklin. We also organised a popular Legal Tech breakfast meeting, which was a great success, and we are planning to build on this with a further event in the new year.

ULaw's involvement with the Law Society has fostered a sense of community and collaboration between students, academics, and practitioners. These events are instrumental in preparing students for their legal careers by offering opportunities to connect with potential mentors and employers.

Collaboration with Newcastle University

The collaboration between ULaw and Newcastle University has been exceptionally successful. We provide undergraduate law students with a seamless transition into vocational legal training within a familiar institution and city. We offer guidance to both law and non-law undergraduate students on their next steps, including delivering career talks to third-year law students about what they should be doing to advance their legal careers.

Launch of the Bar Practice Course

A significant milestone in ULaw's success at Newcastle has been the introduction of the Bar Practice Course (BPC). Designed to equip aspiring barristers with the practical skills and knowledge required to succeed at the Bar, this course offers students a rigorous and career-focused education. With small class sizes, expert tutors, and a practice-driven curriculum, the BPC has quickly become one of the most sought-after programs at the campus.

The success of the course lies in its immersive teaching style. Students are trained through real-world scenarios and practical exercises such as advocacy sessions, drafting, and negotiation workshops. This hands-on approach, combined with mentorship from practicing barristers, ensures that students are well-prepared for the challenges of the profession. The introduction of the BPC has significantly enhanced ULaw’s reputation in the region and beyond.

Exclusive Partnerships with Law Firms

ULaw Newcastle has also distinguished itself through the development of strategic partnerships with prominent law firms. Notably, the University has formed exclusive partnerships with Muckle LLP and Ward Hadaway, two of the North East’s leading law firms, with plans to establish further collaborations with regional firms.

Conclusion

The University of Law at Newcastle University has quickly become a vital hub for legal education and professional development in the region. With the successful launch of the Bar Practice Course, exclusive partnerships with firms like Muckle LLP and Ward Hadaway, and active involvement with the Law Society, ULaw is creating an environment where students are supported, challenged, and well-prepared for successful careers in law. As we continue to expand our offerings and strengthen our ties with the legal community, ULaw’s presence at Newcastle is set to grow even further.
