NEWCASTLE LAW SOCIETY NEWCASTLE NEWS

SEPTEMBER 2024

The first six months of my Presidential Year have been extremely busy and the team at Newcastle upon Tyne Law Society is looking forward to the next six months.

We have a number of events taking place, further details of which are included in this Newsletter.  However, I would like to draw your attention to the following events hosted by the Society in September and October:

  • Money laundering and compliance dinner hosted by one of our sponsors, Amiqus.  This is an event for our members who are Money Laundering Reporting Officers or Compliance Officers for Legal Practice on the evening of Tuesday the 10th of September. This will be held in the Banqueting Hall at Blackfriars in Newcastle from 6.30pm - 9.30pm. The evening will be hosted under Chatham House rules, providing a relaxed opportunity for discussion, sharing of experiences, and debate among peers within the legal sector's MLROs & Compliance community. Firms of all sizes are welcome to join and we expect to organise a series of events to build upon this theme.
  • A Brave New World of Mediation seminar.  Rob Langley will provide a practical explanation of the new law on compulsory mediation of civil disputes after Churchill v Merthyr Tydfil (CA, 2023) and also of recent caselaw on when and why contractual clauses for ADR will lead to actions being stayed. The seminar will take place on Thursday 19th of September at 12.00pm- 1.30pm at the offices of Womble Bond Dickinson (The Spark, Draymans Way, Newcastle Helix, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 5DE). A light lunch will be provided for those that attend in person, a Teams link can be arranged for those that want to join remotely.
  • Newcastle Law Society Annual Dinner.  The Dinner will take place as usual at Gosforth Park Hotel on 11th October.  We hope it will be a fantastic evening of celebration and entertainment.  Tickets are nearly sold out, please get in contact if you would like to attend.   One of the best parts of the evening is the presentation of a certificate to each of all our newly qualified solicitors.  Please let us know the names of your NQs to enable them to take part.
  • The Northern Cybercrime Seminar.  We are hosting the event in partnership with the Northern Society for Chartered Accountants (NORSCA) on Wednesday the 23rd of October from 5.30pm.  We will hear from Northumbria Police’s Cyber Crime Prepare and Protect Team who are keen to support legal and accountancy firms to understand current cybercrime threats and the extent to why both of these professional services are being targeted by cyber criminals and hacktivists.  Northumbria University and Amiqus will also be presenting.

Please see the Events page on our website Events - Newcastle Law Society for further information on the above and other events which you can attend.

We continue to work closely with The National Law Society on various initiatives and consultations.  The main consultation at present is regarding the conveyancing TA6 form.  We are liaising with the entity which The Law Society has engaged to carry out the consultation, but if you have any views in the meantime, please communicate them to us.

Finally, thank you for all of your support during the first half of my Presidency.  We have achieved a great deal in this period and I look forward to further progressing to a bigger and better North East legal sector in the next six months.
